P.E.M.D.A.S= Parenthesis, Exponents,  Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

Parenthesis 1st so 1/4 to the second power= 1/4 * 1/4= 1/16 so now we have, 5/8-1/16 so we have to get a common denominator so we multiply 5/8 by 2 to get a common denominator of 16 and end up getting 10/16 because whatever you do to the denominator you must do to the numerator so now we have, 10/16-1/16 so we subtract 1 from 10 and end up with 9/16.
