Let the two numbers be x and y
xy = -20 . . . . . (1)
x + y = 24 . . . . .(2)
From (2), x = 24 - y . . . . . (3)
Putting (3) into (1), we have:
(24 - y)y = -20
24y - y^2 = -20
y^2 - 24y - 20 = 0
y = 12 + 2√41 and x = 12 - 2√41
