The term black plague (or the great death or black death) is used to refer to the plague epidemic that ravaged across Europe between 1347 and 1352 and caused the death of at least a third of the continent's population. Similar epidemics spread at the same time in Asia and the Near East, suggesting that this European epidemic was part of a wider global epidemic.
