The Crusades increased the power and prestige of the towns. Many communities were able to purchase their charters from barons who needed funds to initiate their own campaigns to the Holy Land. A middle class of merchants and artisans arose to respond to the needs of the communities and Crusaders. Commercial opportunities also came about as a result of the Crusades as well as the significant growth in trade and cities of the Romanesque period.
