Dolphins can be awake and asleep at the same time because "one half of their brain 'sleeps' while the other stays awake." This is called Unihemispheric slow-wave sleep (USWS). Dolphins sleep like this in order to stay alive. If they were completely unconscious they would drown (they still need to come up for air occasionally like whales) or killed by a predator.
