The exchange rate provides the amount of one currency that has to be provided in order to obtain one unit of a different currency.

For example, the exchange rate yen/euro, determines the amount of yens that need to be paid to obtain 1€. According to the chart, on the 3rd of April of 2013, 119.4065 yens had to be paid for 1€.
